Demonstrating their commitment to anti-racism trends, France decided to ban the usual name of the famous detective novel by Agatha Christie “Ten Negroes”.
A descendant of the writer James Pritchard, commenting on this decision, argues that Agatha Christie “would not have liked it if someone had been offended by her word of mouth. According to him, in 2020, it is unacceptable to use terms that could hurt anyone.
“The language at the time when this book was written was different, many words used in it are now forgotten. The story is based on the famous counting machine, which was not invented by Agatha Christie. I can almost say that the original name has never been used in the U.S., and in Britain it was changed in the 80s of last century”, – said Pritchard.
Now the novel “Ten Negroes” is distributed in France under the title “There were ten of them”. It has already appeared on the shelves of a large bookstore chain and costs 5.6 euros.
