While Washington criticizes other governments for violent riot control, Tennessee has taken drastic measures after months of protests against police abuse and racism.
According to The Hill, Gov. William Lee has signed legislation to increase penalties for certain types of protests. It is noteworthy that the approval of the new legislation took place without publicity.
It is now illegal in the state to hold campground rallies on municipal land. Violation of this prohibition amounts to a class E felony and is punishable by up to 6 years in prison. Moreover, those found guilty of a crime, under state law, lose their right to vote in elections.
The Tennessee General Assembly voted in favor of the ban after months of protests against racism and tyranny by the security forces outside the state administration building. The rallies here began after a Minneapolis policeman killed a black repeat offender George Floyd during his arrest.
