In recent weeks, the pro-Western opposition of Belarus has actively tried to oust Alexander Lukashenko, however, the Kremlin is confident that a revolutionary scenario should not be expected.
This was reported by Reuters, citing two sources familiar with Moscow’s position in the Belarusian direction.
As the interlocutor of the journalists said, Russian leader Vladimir Putin still relies on Lukashenko, although he has recently been known for his criticism of the Russian Federation.
“They don’t like him very much, but they support him anyway,” said one source who, according to Reuters, regularly talks to senior government and Kremlin officials.
Another source drew attention to the fact that attempts by the West to carry out a coup d’etat in Belarus weakened Lukashenka’s position, thereby rendering Moscow a favor. According to him, now the head of the neighboring republic will be more accommodating.
The Kremlin is confident that Lukashenko will cope with the crisis, despite a number of tactical mistakes, both sources said. Riots alone are not enough to bring about a revolutionary scenario.
