The United States’ desire to deploy intermediate and short-range missiles in the Asian region is directed against China and is capable of destabilizing the situation both in the region and in the world as a whole. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.
Earlier, the US special envoy for arms control Marshal Billingsley said in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Nikkei that the US plans to discuss with a number of Asian countries ways to increase protection measures for allies amid growing threats from China, including the possibility of deploying medium and short-range ground-based missiles.
“We believe this is a destabilizing measure from the point of view of international and regional security. Undoubtedly, the emergence of new American missile weapons in the region would provoke a dangerous spiral of the arms race – again. We are also forced to take into account that such weapons would create additional missile risks for our territory, including objects of strategic importance, which will require taking the necessary response measures, ” Zakharova said.
