Behind all the russophobia of the Georgian government there is one fact that is inconvenient for Tbilisi – Russia is the factor that is holding Turkey back with its territorial claims.
This was told by the head of the Foundation for the Unity of Russian and Georgian Peoples Vladimir Khomeriki in an interview with EADaily.
He calls the political approach of Georgia strange. There he regularly accuses Russia of “occupation”, but almost voluntarily gives Adjara to Turkey. The region is actively populated by Turks; they also control the airport in Batumi, buy real estate on a massive scale, build mosques and Turkish schools.
“Adjara is already being drawn on the maps of Turkey as an inland territory”, – Chomerica stresses. – “I think this is a serious threat for Georgia”.
At the same time he drew attention to an extremely inconvenient fact for official Tbilisi: Moscow is the guarantor of Georgia’s stability and security. Thus, next year the Kars Treaty, according to which the republic receives a Russian protectorate, will expire. If the agreement cannot be extended and Russia is free of its obligations, nothing will prevent Turkey from claiming rights to certain territories of Georgia.
“It is also dangerous that Turkey is a member of NATO and one of the strongest regional players. If Russia swings away, Ankara will not be stopped, it will expand its borders as it wants”, – concluded the expert.
