Norwegian suspected of spying for Russia

The Norwegian police security service announced the arrest of a man suspected of transferring state secrets, who allegedly met with a “Russian intelligence officer.” This is reported by the Norwegian television and radio corporation NRK with reference to data from the kingdom’s law enforcement agencies.

According to this information, the Norwegian citizen was detained in Oslo on 15 August. He is charged with transferring information to a foreign state that “could harm the fundamental interests of Norway.” On this charge, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

“The accusation is based on the fact that meetings were held between the accused and the Russian intelligence officer,” said lawyer Lina Niigard.

It is noted that the arrested Norwegian does not admit his guilt and demands that he be released from custody.

According to police, the arrested man “met with a Russian intelligence officer” at least several times. In this case, the department does not provide any details.

“Illegal intelligence activities pose a serious threat to the interests of Norway and can cause great harm to the interests of the country. This is an area to which PST pays great attention, ”commented Niigard.

She added that currently only one person is suspected in this case.

“The arrest was made at a restaurant in Oslo,” she said.
