US Senate threatens Lukashenko with sanctions

According to American lawmakers, the struggle of the Belarusian president to preserve the constitutional order in the country is an “attack on democracy”.

According to TASS, senior Democrat of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate, Robert Menendez (from the state of New Jersey), believes that the Belarusian authorities should recount the votes or hold repeated presidential elections.

“The Donald Trump administration should clearly state that none of the latest achievements in US-Belarusian relations will be of value until the Belarusian authorities count the votes correctly or hold re-elections in accordance with international, democratic standards”, – the senator said. “If the violent violation of democratic values continues, then I expect the US and EU to quickly restore sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and his entourage”.
