In Israel, thousands of citizens, angry at the consequences of the quarantine, gathered for a protest rally outside the residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Protesters waved Israeli flags and called on Netanyahu to resign because he could not protect jobs and businesses affected by the pandemic. People who had lost their jobs because of quarantine were also dissatisfied with the late arrival of government aid.
Protests spread beyond Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem. Many Israelis gathered on bridges and highway interchanges throughout the country.
On a busy overpass north of Israel’s Tel Aviv commercial center, demonstrators waved black flags and chanted slogans, and cars were honking on the roadway below.
