Street protests continue in downtown Beirut for a second day. The August 8 clashes were violent, with 490 people injured, including about 70 police, according to the Civil Defence Service. The Army Press Service reported that 105 servicemen, including eight officers, were injured in the crackdown on the riots in Beirut.

Opposition-backed protesters are calling for the resignation of the technocratic government led by Hassan Diab, early elections and an international investigation into the August 4 bombing of Beirut’s seaport. The blast destroyed and damaged dozens of houses and left more than 300,000 homeless. At least 154 people were killed, about 5,000 were injured and dozens are missing. According to the Lebanese Interior Ministry, the cause of the tragedy was the fire of more than 2.7 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate, confiscated by customs services six years ago during the welding works.
