Aid to Lebanon must be accompanied by reform

International leaders met to discuss aid to Lebanon at a donor conference hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and the United Nations, and indicated that aid to the country must be accompanied by reform.

Aid to Lebanon must be accompanied by reform

The conference sought to support the Middle Eastern country after an explosion in the capital, Beirut, killed 158 people.

International investors said after the conference that help would be needed to carry out the reforms called for by the protesters.

Elysée confirmed to AFP that investors have raised a total of € 250 million to support Lebanon.

The European Commission said in a statement that it will donate an additional € 30 million in addition to the € 33 million already promised to the country.

Funding will go to international organizations and NGOs and will be “strictly controlled”, the bloc said in a statement.
