As tensions escalated between China and the U.S., the U.S. administration took a provocative step by selling drones to Taiwan.
This is reported by the agency “Reuters,” referring to own sources, familiar with the negotiations.
According to the media, the partially recognized republic, which China considers its territory, and which is demonstrably supported by the U.S., will purchase the drones “SeaGuardian” with a range of more than 11 thousand kilometers. This is 37 times the performance of the current Taiwanese drones. Thus, says Reuters, Taiwan will be able to spy on China’s Air Force, its missiles and other military facilities.
Drones, ground stations and spare parts will cost about $600 million. Sources say the State Department approved the deal quietly. At the same time, they do not rule out the fact that the Department allowed the sale of drones to Taiwan – a corresponding application was received from Taiwan at the beginning of the year.
If the deal goes through, the relationship between Beijing and Washington, which has already reached its lowest level in decades, could further deteriorate. The Taiwan Department of Defense has declined to comment on the situation.
