Thousands of women in Istanbul have protested against increased domestic violence

Several thousand women in Turkey demonstrated, calling on the authorities to take decisive action to end violence against women.

Women were holding signs bearing the names of victims killed by men or relatives as a result of domestic violence. Human rights groups demand that the Government strictly comply with the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.
Turkey was among the first countries to ratify this agreement, also known as the Istanbul Convention, as it was signed in Istanbul in 2011.
