The American ambassador may appear in Minsk after a 12-year hiatus, when the two countries mutually recalled their diplomats.
As reported by Echo Moskvy, the US Senate will hold hearings today, following which a new ambassador to Belarus, career diplomat Julie Fisher, may be approved.
“US President Donald Trump nominated US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Julie Fisher for the post of United States Ambassador to Belarus in early May. At a meeting with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in February, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington would soon appoint an ambassador to Belarus. In turn, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei confirmed Minsk’s readiness to send its ambassador to the United States in the near future,” the statement says.
Julie Fischer previously served as Deputy Chief of the US Mission to NATO, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Russia, and served at US Embassies in Georgia and Ukraine. Fischer’s appointment as ambassador to Belarus should not cause controversy in the Senate.
