British citizens flee from the kingdom to Western Europe. Such trends have been observed before, but after the referendum on Brexit their number increased by 30%.
The Guardian writes about it, referring to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as Eurostat.
According to statistics, if between 2008 and 2015, migration from Britain to the EU countries averaged 56,832 people, then between 2016 and 2018 it increased to 73,642 people. Moreover, studies show that the number of Britons who obtained citizenship in one of the EU countries has increased by 500%. In Germany, this figure has generally reached 20000%.
“This increase is justified when a country is expected to be affected by a major economic or political crisis”, – said Daniel Auer, co-author of a study by Oxford University and the Berlin Centre for Social Sciences.
Daniel Tetlow, another participant in the study, says that the situation of British citizenship in the European Union is “further evidence that an increasing number of people are deciding to emigrate in order to protect themselves from some of the most negative consequences of Brexit on their lives”.
However, Britain’s grim prospects are not the only thing that forced its citizens to pack their bags and travel to the continent. The agreement between London and Brussels, although it enshrines the residence, work and social rights of EU citizens in Britain, does not provide for the opposite. That is, under Brexit conditions, the British are deprived of the possibility of employment, residence and even free movement in the EU.
