The U.S. has seized a former Soviet base for potential confrontation with Russia

The Pentagon initiates a major foreign military construction project to re-equip the former Soviet military base “Kympiya-Turkey” for its needs.

According to the official edition of the U.S. military department, the U.S. Air Force Command has already requested more than 130 million dollars from Congress for the reconstruction of the base, which they want to make a NATO stronghold in the Black Sea region.

The Kympiya-Turkey air base is located in central Romania. In its request, the U.S. Air Force noted that this military facility is a key way to “respond to the ever-changing conditions of European security. From time to time American fighter jets land here, and last year MQ-9 “Reaper” drones were deployed to the base to monitor the Black Sea.

“If this budget project is approved, it will be the largest foreign military construction project funded by the Pentagon since the launch of the European Deterrence Initiative in 2014”, –  wrote the Chinese edition of Zhenmin Zhibao.

At the moment, the infrastructure of the base does not allow the U.S. military contingent to fully deploy. In particular, there is no platform for the parking of large-size aircraft. Nevertheless, the Pentagon is already investing in the development of the former Soviet air base. Such intentions, as written by the Chinese media, mean that the confrontation between Russia and the U.S. in Europe will be more complex and longer lasting.
