The US has threatened European supporters of Nord Stream 2, saying Russia wants to increase and exploit the EU’s dependence on its gas. This statement was made by a representative of the American embassy in Germany, writes Deutsche Welle.
The diplomat noted that although the US does not impose new sanctions, participation in the project will carry risks.
The construction of Nord Stream 2 was suspended due to sanctions imposed by the United States in December 2019 against gas pipeline contractors. In July 2020, the US Senate approved new sanctions measures against the Russian gas pipeline.
President Vladimir Putin announced in January 2020 that the pipeline would be completed by Russian forces, but construction would be completed several months later than planned.
