The riots have not stopped in Portland for days.
U.S. federal security officials will remain in Portland, Oregon, until protesters leave attempts to attack the federal courthouse in that city. Oregon’s prosecutor, Billy Williams, made a statement to that effect on Monday.
“We will not leave the [courthouse] unprotected in a situation where it could suffer at the hands of people targeting it”, – Associated Press reported. – “To order federal employees to leave [the city] in the face of ongoing attacks on federal employees and property is not the solution.”
“Night-time pogroms must stop”, – Williams said. – “We have to protect the building [of the court] and the justice system that is located there.”
The riots in Portland have been going on for days now. One man was stabbed during the protests on Saturday night. On Friday night, law enforcement officials used special means to disperse protesters outside the federal courthouse.
Previously, federal law enforcement officers were deployed to Portland by decision of the American administration. They were involved in bringing the bombers to justice. Democrats criticized US President Donald Trump in this regard.
Mass protests and riots began in many cities in the country in late May after the death of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis (Minnesota). Police used a suffocating seizure to arrest him. All four law enforcement officers involved in the operation were dismissed and charged. The U.S. National Guard joined the local police to restore order. There were curfews in about 40 cities, including Washington and New York.
