Two demonstrators were killed in clashes with police in Baghdad

Clashes between Iraqi demonstrators and security forces in central Baghdad last night killed at least two demonstrators. The local media reported this, citing security forces.

This is the first bloody incident in months on Tahrir Square, which became a symbol of anti-government protests during last year’s mass demonstrations.

The crowd moved from Tahrir Square to neighbouring Tayaran Square, protesting against increased blackouts in the heat wave.

Police, medics and the demonstrators themselves reported that security forces attempted to contain the protesters and used tear gas. According to a source in the security forces, the protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails.
Two demonstrators and Ali Bayati, a member of the semi-official Higher Commission for Human Rights of Iraq, said that security forces used live ammunition to disperse the crowd.
