According to the Federal Statistical Office, 21.2 million people in Germany have a migration background.
The share of people with a migrant background in Germany continues to grow, but growth is slowing down. According to the Federal Statistical Office, last year their number rose to 21.2 million and thus represents 26 percent of the country’s population.
The increase over the previous year was 2.1 percent and is thus the lowest level since 2011. Almost two thirds (65 percent) of people with a migrant background are immigrants and their descendants. According to statistics, this corresponds to 13.8 million people, of which 7.5 million have roots in other EU member states.
The 4.6 million migrants living in Germany are from Asia and their descendants and represent 22 percent of all people with a migrant background (in 2019), of whom 3.2 million are from the Middle East.
