Moscow will face a new set of sanctions, and in the foreseeable future.
This statement was made by the Ukrainian ambassador to Washington, Vladimir Yelchenko.
According to him, Russia must submit to the will of the West by changing its behavior. Otherwise, it will be excluded from the society of worldwide interbank financial communication channels “SWIFT”.
“If this behavior of Russia, which we see now, continues further, I believe that in the near future they will face sanctions, such as disconnecting from SWIFT,” the diplomat says.
He admitted that there is an important problem with such a radical move – it will also affect Russia’s partners. It is this fact that makes the countries be cautious about disconnecting the Russian Federation.
In addition, Yelchenko did not rule out a ban on direct flights between Russia and the United States, which is now already discontinued due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“They [the sanctions] are lying and waiting in the wings,” the Ukrainian ambassador added, admitting that he did not know when the restrictive measures might take effect.
As News Front reported earlier, former US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor also spoke about disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT system. He made his statement against the backdrop of an information campaign launched in Kiev that the Russian Federation is allegedly preparing an offensive against Ukraine. Such theses were promoted even by the ex-commander of the US Armed Forces in Europe Ben Hodges. The lack of water in Crimea is cited as a motivation for the offensive in Ukraine, which is why it is important for Russia to take control of the dam in the Kherson region.
