Still last December in the US Congress along with the sanctions package. He touched upon the companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2. When the punitive measures came into effect, the Swiss company Allseas withdrew from the project. Construction was suspended at the final stage.

The sanctions have now been expanded. They can allow Washington to contribute to the blacklist of companies and structures, find insurance assistance in the construction of a gas pipeline or legal support for the project. Thus,

“The threat of immediate sanctions against European companies participating in the Nord Stream 2 project marks an incredibly low level of transatlantic relations”, –  Hermes commented on the situation.

The US administration’s approach has been described as an unprecedented attack on Europe’s energy sovereignty. As a result of this policy, approximately 120 companies from 12 European countries were under the threat of direct US punitive measures. Moreover, Washington’s intervention will provoke a shortage of gas supplies. Consumers have to pay additional costs of 4 billion euros per year.

“The United States provides free and fair competition, uses its sanctions without any restrictions to protect its economic interests. We have no choice but to respond to this link. As has already been announced, the European Commission must repel all attacks on its sovereignty and quickly present a tough catalog of measures”, – said Hermes.
