China has warned that Britain will “suffer consequences” if it continues on the “wrong path” in Hong Kong.
On Monday, the UK suspended its extradition agreement with Hong Kong due to a new security law for the former colony that gives Beijing more power.
In response, the Chinese ambassador to London said Britain was “clearly meddling” in China’s affairs.
Liu Xiaoming said: “China has never interfered in the internal affairs of Great Britain. Britain should do the same with China. “
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to give three million Hong Kong residents the opportunity to settle in the UK, which would eventually allow them to apply for British citizenship.
The move comes after a controversial new security law was passed in Beijing at the end of June, which resulted in offenses that could result in Hong Kong residents being sent to mainland China for trial.
