Germany will have to thoroughly defend the interests of European companies that want to buy Russian gas at competitive prices.
Economist Dmitry Abzalov told about this, commenting on the air of the First Channel of the US efforts to block the implementation of the Nord Stream-2 project.
As previously reported by News Front, in December last year, the US Congress, along with the military budget, dragged through a package of sanctions. He touched upon the companies directly involved in the construction. When the punitive measures took effect, the Swiss company Allseas, which provided pipelayers and supply vessels, withdrew from the project. Construction was suspended at the final stage.
The new package of US sanctions will allow Washington to blacklist companies and structures that provide insurance assistance in the construction of the gas pipeline or legal support for the project. Thus, even government organizations can be subject to restrictions.
Abzalov, in turn, claims that all threats and attempts at pressure from the United States will lose their meaning when Nord Stream 2 is completed. The fact is that at the moment the US sanctions concern only those companies that are involved in the construction of the gas pipeline. At the same time, it is more than expected that Washington will switch to companies that want to buy Russian gas. Clients are easy enough to identify at the stage of the transaction.
“They intend to introduce secondary sanctions against those companies that will purchase gas from this pipe. Berlin will have to protect companies that buy Russian gas for transit and resale, otherwise Germany, France, Austria, and other states will be subject to US sanctions, ”the economist said.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of Nord Stream 2 for Germany in the medium term. Taking into account the fact that the energy market will recover after the crisis, without this gas pipeline it will be several times more expensive to buy gas.
