Europe does not intend to tolerate pressure from Washington, which openly defies international law.
This statement was made by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, commenting on the recent statement by the head of the US Department of State Michael Pompeo that the Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream gas pipelines will be subject to new sanctions.
Borrell lamented that the United States is increasingly placing Europe on a par with Cuba or Iran, in respect of which restrictive measures are constantly being introduced.
“The European Union is seriously concerned about the increase in the number of sanctions or threats of sanctions from the United States against European companies and their interests. These measures were taken against Iran and Cuba, and now against Nord Stream 2, as well as the Turkish Stream. The European Union firmly rejects any US sanctions against European companies pursuing their legitimate business interests, ” the diplomat said, adding that US actions“ are contrary to international law ”.
As Borrell noted, European policy should be determined in Europe, not imposed by third countries.
