Only three years later it became clear how objective and fair the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia really was.
This is stated in the publication of the American portal “The Duran”.
The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia was established on May 25, 1993 in accordance with the resolution of the UN Security Council. The conflict in the very center of Europe could not be ignored by the international community. The creation of a body that could bring to justice those responsible for the massacres and human rights violations was indeed necessary, but this is already where problems arise.
“The UN Security Council does not even have judicial powers. At the same time, the resolution on the establishment of the tribunal refers to Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which does not even speak of international courts, ” the article says.
However, the tribunal was created, although it never stopped the Bosnian War. The conflict ended only after NATO intervention. The signing of the Dayton Accords in 1995 allowed Bosnia to gain independence. The fate of Yugoslavia was already sealed.
In 1999, NATO again intervened in the Balkan conflict, now on the side of the Kosovar militants. For 2.5 months, the aircraft of the countries of the alliance made 38 thousand sorties. The bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia killed over 1,700 civilians, including almost 400 children.
The International Tribunal was supposed to be a demonstration triumph of justice in the current situation, but from the very beginning it was clear how dependent it was on Washington’s position. It was enough to see who was more often in the dock.
Over the years of its existence, the ICTY has brought charges against 161 people, and more than 60% of them are Serbs. But 66% of acquittals were received by Albanians. Serbs – only 5%, including sentences for those who did not live to see the end of the trial. Among them was the former President of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic. His death caused a serious resonance.
“The resonance could have been even greater. Today there is reason to believe that there was nothing to bring Milosevic to justice, and the released politician could have questioned the entire activities of the ICTY, ” the article says.
