State Duma evaluates consequences of US attempts to stop Nord Stream-2

The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline will be completed, despite opposition and sanctions from the United States, all attempts to interfere with the implementation of the project “will end in failure”, said Mikhail Sheremet, a State Duma deputy and member of the energy committee.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that the State Department published recommendations under the law on countering Russia through sanctions, including in the document Nord Stream-2 and the second string of the Turkish Stream. These actions put investments and other actions related to Russian export pipelines at risk of the US sanctions.

“The United States is unable to stop the construction of Nord Stream-2. The gas pipeline will be completed, despite opposition and sanctions. The former US influence on European countries has been lost. American attempts to interfere with the construction will end badly for them”, – Sheremet told the reporters. His words were quoted by RIA Novosti.

According to him, it is impermissible on the part of the United States to dictate conditions to Russia and the countries of the European Union.

“Russia has learned to effectively counteract all attempts by the United States to hinder its development. It is now time for the United States to learn how to resolve all issues at the negotiating table and not impose its interests on other countries. The time of American dictatorship and hegemony in the world has passed irrevocably. It’s time for them to take into account the new reality”, – the deputy stressed.

Nord Stream-2 is a new export gas pipeline under construction from Russia to Europe across the Baltic Sea. The entry point of the gas pipeline into the Baltic Sea is the Ust-Luga region of the Leningrad Region, the exit point is on the territory of Germany in the Greifswald region. The length of the route is over 1200 kilometers. The total capacity of the two lines of Nord Stream-2 is 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The total design capacity of Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 is 110 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
