The EU Court of Justice, without right of appeal, terminated the transatlantic agreement known as the “EU-US Privacy Shield”.
The Privacy Shield regulated the exchange of data between the United States and the European Union for commercial purposes. In particular, he made it easier for American companies to access personal data of Europeans.
On Thursday, July 16, the EU Supreme Court ruled that the agreement endangers the data of citizens of the commonwealth countries, taking into account the domestic legislation of the United States on access and use of government information by US government agencies. In this regard, the agreement was terminated without the right to appeal against the court ruling.
“This decision is based on a violation of US surveillance laws, which only protect US citizens, not foreigners”, – privacy campaigner Max Schrems said in a comment to Bloomberg.
According to him, in fact, the US law enforcement agencies can freely use the personal data of Europeans, which American technology companies receive from the EU. This does not even require a special permission from the court, this does not imply compensation for damage to foreigners.
