The British Parliament is planning to present a long-awaited report on “Russian intervention” to distract public attention from unsuccessful negotiations with the European Union and the coronavirus disaster.
On Thursday, 16 July, the Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee agreed to release a document that had been refused publication since last year.
As early as last fall, The Times circulated information that the Conservative Party, whose leader is Boris Johnson, allegedly received sponsorship contributions from a number of Russian entrepreneurs. The Times referred to the committee’s classified report. The publication appeared against the background of the election campaign launched on November 6 to discredit the future premier.
“This morning, the committee unanimously agreed that it would publish the Report on Russia prepared by his predecessor before Parliament goes on summer vacation”, – according to a statement from the committee, which was headed by Conservative MP Julian Lewis the day before.
It is worth noting that due to the fact that the report was refused to publish since last year, the opposition questioned the motives of the conservatives. Referring to the information of The Times, they intended to accuse the opponent of relations with Russia. However, the government assured Johnson had nothing to fear. Thus, the report becomes yet another Russophobic tool that will distract people’s attention from real problems.
As you know, such a strategy was previously actively used by Boris Johnson’s predecessor Teresa May. Failures of Brexit negotiations have always been accompanied by accusations against Russia in the scandalous case of the Violins allegedly poisoned in Salisbury. The incident has now been forgotten, despite the apparent resonance.
