Media: a restaurant was demolished in Atlanta, where a cop killed African-American Brooks

According to the AJC, the restaurant was demolished “in cooperation with the city authorities and for security reasons”.

A fast food restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, near where African-American policeman Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed, was demolished on Tuesday. This was reported by the local television station Fox5.

He gives no official reasons for the demolition of the American fast-food chain Wendy’s restaurant, but notes that after the death of Brooks on June 12, the place became a gathering point for many protesters. The footage shown on the channel shows that the building is painted with anti-racism slogans, including the Black Lives Matter movement.

The situation worsened here after a minor child was shot and killed in front of a shop on July 4. Against this background, police fenced off visitors from the square in front of the restaurant. The local online portal AJC cites a statement by a representative of the fast-food chain, who pointed out that the restaurant was decided to be demolished “in cooperation with the city authorities and for security reasons.

Protests and unrest in Georgia, as in many American states, erupted in late May after the death in Minneapolis, Minnesota, of African-American George Floyd. It escalated after police officer Garrett Rolfe shot African-American Rayshard Brooks in detention on June 12 in Atlanta. Brooks resisted the police, stole a stun gun from the detainees and, fleeing, allegedly tried to use it against the detainees. Brooks was hospitalized, doctors failed to save his life.

Rolf was dismissed from the city police, his partner Devin Brosnon, who was also involved in the detention of an African-American, was suspended from active duty. Rolf is expected to be charged with murder, Brosnon with the attack on Brooks and other crimes. The Atlanta Chief of Police, Erica Shields, resigned in connection with the incident.
