The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that Washington’s unilateral actions run counter to the fundamental principles of international law.

Chinese authorities will impose sanctions on a number of U.S. citizens and organizations in connection with the signing by U.S. President Donald Trump of a decree on measures to put pressure on Beijing in connection with the situation in Hong Kong. This was reported on Wednesday by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“We are forced to impose sanctions to protect our national interests. These measures will affect both individuals and organizations”, –  reads the statement, published on the website of the agency.

It stresses that Washington’s unilateral actions are contrary to the fundamental principles of international law.

“This is a flagrant interference in the affairs of Hong Kong and in China’s domestic affairs. We express our categorical discontent and strong protest in this regard”, –  the statement stresses.

According to the document, Beijing intends to firmly defend its sovereignty as well as national security and stability.

“China insists that the U.S. correct the mistakes made and refuse to implement the bill on Hong Kong. <…> In the event that this does not happen, a tough response will follow”, – it said.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said that he signed a bill on sanctions against China in connection with the situation in Hong Kong, as well as an executive decree to cancel U.S. trade and economic preferences for this special administrative region of China. The new measures provide for the freezing of assets of individual Chinese citizens on the territory of the United States.
