According to reports, of the 62 confirmed cases of infection on the island, 39 were recorded at the Futenma air force base of the US Marine Corps, 22 – at the Hansen military camp and one at Kinser camp. Later, the local Asahi TV channel reported that 32 more infected were identified on the Futenma base.

Okinawa Governor Dani Tamaki, in turn, criticized the command of the US Armed Forces for negligence in ensuring security.

“I have serious doubts about the measures of the US armed forces to prevent infections,” the official said.

According to him, there is information that the US military left the base and held beach parties on the occasion of US Independence Day.

The press service of the US Marine Corps against the backdrop of what happened says that any activity of Americans outside military facilities in Okinawa is prohibited.
