As part of a potential deal, the Japanese side will receive 105 aircraft. Congress must consider a military contract.
The US State Department approved the sale of 105 F-35 fifth-generation fighter bombers and related equipment to Japan for a total of $ 23.11 billion. This was announced on July 9 by the Pentagon’s Department for Defense Cooperation and Security.
It is noted that the proposed sale “will contribute to the goals of US foreign policy and national security, increasing the security of the main ally, which is a force to ensure political stability and economic progress in the Asia-Pacific region.”
“For the interests of US national security, it is vital to help Japan develop and maintain a powerful and effective self-defense potential,” the report said.
The State Department was notified of this decision by Congress, which must study the new military contract within 30 days and approve it, or block it.
