The coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing large-scale economic crisis could play into Moldova’s hands if it joins the Eurasian Economic Union.
This was told by German political scientist Alexander Rahr in a commentary on the Sputnik radio station.
To date, the prospects for Moldova’s accession to the European Union remain vague, and the conditions of cooperation are not in favor of the republic. Against this background, Chisinau has been actively building relations with the Eurasian Economic Union. Although previously in the West they were unhappy with such actions, now the situation on the world stage is changing. Moreover, it pushes the Moldovan government to decisive action.
According to Alexander Rar, the republic needs to join the EAEU for the simple reason that in such associations, weaker countries have the opportunity to receive subsidies and other assistance from strong states. Moreover, Moldova has a unique opportunity to benefit from the policy of neutrality promoted by President Igor Dodon.
“Such countries as Moldova will benefit from such a common space. There will be no confrontation between the two blocs – the Russian and Brussels. It will be possible, it seems to me, to associate yourself with the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union. It will even be encouraged. There will be countries for which this is very beneficial, ”Rahr emphasizes.
According to him, today the tension in relations between Europe and Russia is easing, and Moldova can use this normalization for its own economic benefit.
