On the night of July 7-8, pro-Western opposition attempted to seize the Serbian parliament building, speaking out against the forced measures to combat COVID-19 introduced by President Alexander Vučić.
At the moment, it is known that activists of the pro-Western movement “1 out of 5 million”, members of the opposition group “Let’s not drown Belgrade”, Dragan Djilas and a group led by Srjan Nogo attempted to seize parliament, resulting in general turmoil and clashes with the police.
It is reported that protesters repeatedly tried to break into the parliament building by throwing stones, eggs and cans at police officers.
Activists managed to enter the parliament hall, however, soon, law enforcement officers forced the protesters out of the building.
The reason for the protests was the announcement by the President of Serbia, Alexander Vučić, of measures to ban the gathering of more than five people and curfews next weekend due to the worsening epidemiological situation in Belgrade. Opposition parties that boycotted the election criticized the introduction of new measures and stated that the government was responsible for increasing the number of people infected.
Activists insist that the government allegedly provided false information about the situation with COVID-19 in the country, and also demand that both the government and members of the crisis headquarters be prosecuted.
