While modern ideologists of equality decide whether to write the word “black” with a capital letter, in the US there are consistently more pressing problems that are persistently ignored.
This is stated in the material of The Washington Post.
As noted in the media, July 4 is a good day to take stock of the state of freedom, both in the US and other countries. In this regard, the author points out how the all-Russian vote allowed Vladimir Putin to remain in office as president until 2036. Meanwhile, Hong Kong passed a national security law that prevented Washington from interfering in the internal affairs of this administrative region of China. In Poland, the second round of the presidential election will show whether the country will continue to abandon liberal ideas. At the same time, it is noted that all this does not concern American politicians anymore. Moreover, the United States “has its own problems with freedom”, and it’s far from Donald Trump.
“The president can be an instinctive fascist, a smug copycat. But after almost four years in power, he was exposed as incompetent. A more serious problem today comes from the left: from liberal elites, who, when checking, lack the boldness of their liberal beliefs”, – the article says.
Previously, in the USA there were ardent champions of freedom, but now everything has changed. Their modern successors “capitulate to people who demand freedom of speech for themselves, but not for others”, to people who “constantly rewrite the past in order to better control the future”, to people who “demand a public apology to those who sinned against an increasingly radical ideological standard”.
“Like everything else, George Orwell was here before us. In connection with the recent vandalism regarding monuments and the destruction of statues, the 1984 series recalls: “all books are corrected, paintings are rewritten, statues, streets and buildings are renamed, all dates are changed”, – continues WP.
Far not only “Russian totalitarianism” worried Orwell when he wrote his books, the article says. No less problematic are the “arguments used by most of the Western intelligentsia to justify repression”.
There are fierce debates on social media right now about which books to ban, which words to capitalize, and which not supposed to undergo it. Only all these “problems” are far from real US problems, including police arbitrariness, a health crisis, the decline of urban infrastructure, etc.
“The question that matters most is whether the institutions that must uphold liberal ideals, moral trust to survive will gather. Today, July 4, it causes great doubts”, – it is stated in the publication.
