Protests against Beijing’s planned national security legislation resumed in Hong Kong, amid fights and arrests.
Street protests took place in several districts of the administrative centre, in particular in Kowloon and Mong Kok. In the latter, fights erupted and some protesters tried to block the roads. This prompted the police to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd.
Hong Kong police have arrested at least 53 people. The detainees were charged with illegal assembly.
The proposed national security law has raised concerns among activists for democracy in Hong Kong and some foreign governments. It is feared that Beijing will further restrict the autonomy of the administrative region that was promised when Britain returned the territory to China in 1997.
