UN report: The tourism industry lost nearly $200 billion in coronavirus lockdown

As the coronavirus pandemic has paralysed free movement around the world, the influx of tourists has almost halved in the first four months of this year. The UN World Tourism Organization noted that jobs and the economy as a whole are under threat.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in April, the number of tourists around the world fell by 97 percent. This is more than 40 per cent less than in March.

“Between January and April 2020, the number of foreign tourists fell by 44 percent, representing a loss of $195 billion”, –  the UNWTO said on Tuesday.
