The Republic of Korea will continue its efforts to establish lasting peace in the region, said the representative of the South Korean Ministry of Unification
The Republic of Korea will continue its efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula and establish lasting peace in the region. This was announced on Tuesday by the representative of the South Korean Ministry of Unification at the event dedicated to the first anniversary of the meeting of U.S. President Donald Trump and Chairman of the State Council of DPRK Kim Jong-un in Panmunjom on the border of the two Korean states.
“The Government of the Republic of Korea hopes to achieve denuclearization and lasting peace and will continue its efforts to this end”, – the official said.
The first ever US and DPRK summit was held in Singapore on June 12, 2018. During the summit, Kim Jong-un and Trump signed the final joint declaration. Pyongyang then made commitments on denuclearization in exchange for security guarantees from Washington. However, the second DPRK-US summit in Hanoi ended without results. The leaders of the two states also held a short meeting at the border crossing point Panmunjom on 30 June 2019 between the Republic of Korea and the DPRK and agreed to resume negotiations at the working level, but the subsequent meeting of the working groups in Stockholm was inconclusive.
