Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the Chinese authorities would take the necessary measures against US officials in response to the sanctions recently imposed by Washington on Chinese officials.
U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Monday that the United States authorities could respond to Chinese threats to impose visa restrictions on U.S. officials. Chinese authorities announced their intentions after Pompeo announced the imposition of visa sanctions on a number of Chinese representatives for actions against Hong Kong.
“Threats by the Communist Party of China to restrict [issue] visas to U.S. citizens are the latest example of Beijing’s refusal to assume responsibility for violating its obligations to the people of Hong Kong. Nothing will stop us [from taking action] in response”, – the chief of American diplomacy wrote on his Twitter page.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian announced earlier Monday that the Chinese authorities would take the necessary measures against US officials in response to the sanctions recently imposed by Washington on Chinese officials in connection with the “infringement of Hong Kong’s autonomy”. In particular, the official announced the decision to impose visa restrictions on American officials.
