An extension of the arms embargo against Iran will have consequences, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Musawi said.
“An extension of the arms embargo (on Iran) would be a violation of UNSC Resolution 2231 and would certainly have consequences”, – Musawi said at the briefing, adding that the countries supporting the extension of the embargo, which expires in the fall, would be responsible.
Iran and the six international negotiators reached an agreement in July 2015 to resolve the perennial problem of the Iranian atom. The months-long negotiations culminated in the adoption of a Joint Comprehensive Action Plan, the implementation of which will fully lift Iran’s previous economic and financial sanctions by the UN Security Council,
The agreement also stipulated that the arms embargo would be lifted from Iran within five years, arms supplies are possible earlier, but only with the permission of the UNSC. The deal did not last three years in its original form: in May 2018, the U.S. announced its unilateral withdrawal and the reinstatement of tough sanctions against Tehran. However, since only the U.S. formally withdrew from the deal, the rest of its participants must comply with the condition to lift the arms embargo.
