Sri Lanka is discussing with Russia the construction of a nuclear power plant on the island, said Ambassador to Moscow, Professor Migahalande D. Lamavansa.
“Negotiations have begun, and from the Russian side to propose the use of nuclear energy – it is very good, but usually for such projects require a lot of discussion … I think the discussions will continue, then mechanisms will be worked out and something may work out”, – said the diplomat.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yuri Material said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the idea of Russia building a nuclear power plant in Sri Lanka can be discussed and in the long term it can be implemented, given the significant increase in energy consumption in the country. According to the Ambassador, consultations on the draft interstate agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy proposed by the Russian side between Rosatom and relevant agencies of the Republic of Sri Lanka were held for the first time in 2017.
