Citing U.S. officials, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal reported that the Russian military intelligence unit offered proposed awards last year.

The same unit was associated with the assassination attempts in Europe.

The Russian embassy in the United States stated that the claims led to threats to diplomats.

The Taliban also denied having dealt with Russian intelligence.
