The U.S. submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council to extend the arms embargo against Iran, despite Russia’s stated arguments against it. A source in the world organization told TASS on Tuesday.
“The U.S. has submitted its draft resolution to the Security Council members”, – said the TASS interlocutor. – “The UN Security Council meeting on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is scheduled for June 30. Apparently, it will also discuss the submitted draft. “However, the voting date has not been determined yet,” he stressed”.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sent a letter to the UN Secretary General and the President of the Security Council, stating that there are no objective grounds for the Council to discuss the extension of the arms embargo against Iran.
The head of the Foreign Ministry reminded that the procedure for the supply of arms and military equipment to Iran provided for by UN Security Council resolution 2231 is temporary. He specified that application of the provisions on restrictions on arms import to Iran after October 18, 2020 was never expected and there are no legal or other reasons to revise this understanding.
The U.S. in its draft resolution, a copy of which is available to TASS, justifies the need for an extension of the embargo by the fact that “according to UN Secretary General’s estimates, the cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles <…> used in the attack in Saudi Arabia were of Iranian origin.
The document proposes to prohibit all countries from “direct or indirect purchase, sale or transfer <…> to Iran of arms or related materials, unless authorized by a special committee [UNSC]”.
