Another victim of the American struggle with monuments may be a bronze statue of the 26th US President Theodore Roosevelt.
As News Front previously reported, protests provoked by the murder of African-American George Floyd led to a campaign to destroy objectionable monuments. The first victims were memorials to Confederate leaders. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi even demanded to get rid of the statues and portraits of famous Confederates in the Capitol. It is noteworthy that before none of the legislators was embarrassed by such a “neighborhood” for decades.
Now, the American Museum of Natural History of New York announced the demolition of the monument to Teddy Roosevelt. The Republican has always been considered a symbol of progressivism in the United States, and even liberals revered its achievements. It was he who stood at the origins of the creation of the US Navy, which later played an important role in world wars. Moreover, Roosevelt became the first president to invite a black representative to the White House.
This did not stop calling the monument in his honor “a symbol of colonialism.”
The fact is that the memorial depicts Roosevelt on a horse, and next to it – a black man and an Indian. The reason for the demolition of the monument was the fact that the latter are lower than Roosevelt. In this regard, the famous liberal and mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, proclaimed the monument “problematic and racist.”
