Serbian President Alexander Vučić during a visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Belgrade, said that any decision on the issue of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo requires Russia’s consent.
Lavrov is on Thursday in Serbia on his first foreign visit after the COVID-19 pandemic. The program of the stay includes meetings with the President, Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, Patriarch Irenaeus of Serbia and Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic.
“One thing is clear – if ever it somehow comes to any decision on Kosovo, any decision will need the consent of the Russian Federation, because of the UN Security Council and because we don’t want all others to be consulted, and Russia to be ignored”, – Vučić said after talking with Lavrov.
Lavrov said earlier that during the visit he intends to discuss the problem of relations between Belgrade and Pristina with the country’s leadership, including the latest White House proposal to hold a meeting of the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo in Washington on June 27.
He noted that Moscow would accept any version of a Kosovo settlement with which Belgrade would agree, but would not want his agreements with Kosovo to remain on paper, like the previous ones. The Minister explained that he had in mind the agreements of more than five years ago to create a community of Serbian municipalities in Kosovo, as well as the agreement to start a trial of fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army on charges of trafficking in human organs.
