The US Supreme Court said that the Donald Trump administration did not have the right to cancel the DACA program, which protects against deportation of about 800 thousand illegal immigrants who arrived on American territory in childhood.
“The decision of the Homeland Security Ministry to abolish the DACA was voluntary and arbitrary”.
The cancellation of the DACA program, introduced under President Barack Obama, was one of Trump’s domestic political priorities.
The decision said that the administration did not justify the cancellation of the program properly. The issue has not been finally resolved – the administration may provide more detailed justifications for canceling the program in order to try again to cancel it. However, the decision of the Supreme Court is a major defeat on the internal agenda of the administration.
