Zakharova says Venezuelan radicals domestic political decisions have become subject of external interference

Brutal outside pressure and unlawful restriction only exacerbate Venezuelan problems, impede the building of trust between Venezuelans and lead the situation into a standstill, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“The dynamics of events around Venezuela, whose official domestic political decisions, contrary to all democratic norms of international communication, have become the subject of real obstruction, or direct external interference from international critics of the current government, have shown that this path is completely hopeless. Brutal pressure and unlawful restriction only aggravate the country’s problems and prevent building trust between Venezuelans, lead the situation to a standstill”, – Zakharova said at a briefing on Wednesday.

“The radicals and, of course, their external leaders, acting on the principle of “the worse the better”, are increasingly refusing a sense of reality. One just needs to take a fresh look at this situation, we call for it, try to attract influential international players. This approach in our opinion is already beginning to take shape, its essence is the following: the solution to the problems of Venezuela should be peaceful, negotiated and reached by the Venezuelans themselves”, – the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

In Venezuela, on January 21, 2019, mass protests began against President Nicolas Maduro shortly after being sworn in. The head of the National Assembly, controlled by the opposition, Juan Guaido, illegally proclaimed himself the interim head of state. A number of Western countries led by the United States announced the recognition of Guaido. In turn, Maduro called the head of parliament a US puppet. Russia, China, Turkey and several other countries supported Maduro as a legitimate president. In Moscow, they called the “presidential status” of Guaido nonexistent.
