George Gabunia, an odious Georgian journalist who became famous for his foul language against Russian leader Vladimir Putin, found himself at the epicentre of a new anti-Russian campaign.
Against the backdrop of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia, a major provocation was committed. Employees of the local State Security Service captured 37-year-old Russian citizen Vasambe Bokov. Initially the man was detained under the pretext of using false documents, but later it was decided to “hang” the preparation for the murder of George Gabunia.
Now the history of the assassination attempt is being actively replicated by pro-Western Georgian TV channels. One of the key speakers was Nika Gvaramia, General Director of Mtavari Arkhi TV channel. In the past, he was the head of Gabunia, as well as a close associate of the former president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili, who is now hiding in Ukraine.
The Russophobic demarche unfolded a year after anti-Russian protests provoked by the pro-Western opposition began in Georgia. The decision to capture a Russian has clear political overtones. Events are unfolding neatly in the run-up to parliamentary elections and allow the opposition to weaken support for the ruling Georgian Dream party by pushing the anti-Russian agenda along the way.
