The United States and Iraq will begin a strategic dialogue June 11, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said.
“The government (of Iraq) has agreed to the strategic dialogue, which will begin tomorrow, Deputy Secretary of State (David) Hale will lead the dialogue with representatives from the Ministries of Defense, Finance and other agencies and Iraqi counterparts”, – Pompeo said at a press conference.
The dialogue will be based on the 2008 strategic framework agreement, he said.
“The dialogue will cover all areas of our interest – politics, economy, security, culture and energy”, – Pompeo said.
Dialogue between the two countries was interrupted after the U.S. conducted an operation on Iraqi territory in January, killing Iranian General Kassem Suleimani. That led to calls to withdraw the U.S. military from Iraqi territory.
