World War II is not the only era whose annals persistently try to pervert Washington. There are also dubious pages in US history that spoil the face of a democratic power.
According to CNN, US Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy has proposed renaming military facilities that were named after the Confederate commanders. The populist idea came amid protests over the murder of African-American George Floyd by a policeman.
In parallel with the unrest in the United States, an upsurge in anti-racist currents again occurred. These ideas are already actively used by American politicians, in particular, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. McCarthy decided to support the populism of the Democrats and stated that he was open for discussion on the issue of changing the names of military bases to more “democratic” ones.
As you know, the Confederation, which declared independence in 1861 and ceased to exist after the defeat in the Civil War, defended the institution of slavery.
Slavery in the USA lasted from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The vast majority of slaves came from Africa. This fact seriously overshadows the modern look of the “land of freedom” and periodically encourages politicians to struggle with the historical past, for example, by destroying monuments to figures of the Confederation.
Now, as planned by Pentagon officials, military facilities could be renamed, including Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Hood in Texas. In total, about ten objects can rename. How this will affect the level of racism that flourishes in the United States is unknown.
